Our mission

The main goal of the creation of the Scouts of Ukraine is to unite the efforts of young people in order to build a powerful Scouting Movement in Ukraine, as well as to represent Ukraine at the international level.

"Our mission is to help educate the youth of Ukraine according to the system of values based on the Scout Promise and the Scout Law."

Through Scouting, we build a better world where people realize themselves as individuals and play a constructive role in society. We want and develop Ukrainian society, creating conditions for comprehensive personality formation based on the Scout method. We make efforts every day to give the youth of Ukraine the opportunity to grow, contribute to peace, travel, meet Scouts of other countries, etc.

Our Programme

Scouting prepares young people to be active citizens of society, giving them the skills and leadership qualities to respond to the world's challenges. The Scout Youth Program is the base of Scouting.

This is an appropriately organized, practical educational process for children and young people, aimed at harmonious and comprehensive personality development to achieve its highest potential.

The Youth Programme addresses six dimensions of a young person's development – social, physical, intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and character – through opportunities, learning and experience.

Our program is non-prescriptive, which means that we recognize the diversity of interests and experiences of our young people and encourage them to find interesting and exciting tasks. Everyone can choose an activity that corresponds to the main areas of the Programme, which later becomes part of their Scouting journey.

We accept the fact that each Scout has their own way of approaching challenges and encourage each Scout to follow their own special path to achieve higher goals.

Age groups

Age groups: Scouting is divided into different age groups or sections, each offering age-appropriate activities. NOSU Scouts are divided into 4 age sections:

  • Cub Scouts

    6-10 years old

    Cub Scouts

  • Scouts

    11-15 years old

  • Venturers

    Venturers

  • Rovers

    18-22 years old

    Rovers

    18-22 years old

This distribution ensures that the child will interact with their peers and participate in appropriate for this age activities. It is worth noting that from one age section to another, each member of the organization does not move individually, but together with their friends - in their patrol, therefore the boundaries of each age group are not set in stone.

How does it work?

Meetings

Scouts usually meet in their patrols or groups once a week for a patrol/group meeting. For younger children, meetings are conducted by trained adult volunteers called Scout Leaders. Older children self-organize and hold meetings, the Scout leader is not fully involved in this process, but only observes, guides, and helps if necessary. During meetings, Scouts learn new skills, work on projects, and plan future events or adventures. These meetings are not like lessons at school, because an adult leader is not a teacher for children, they are their friend and a mentor. Scouting teaches leadership and teamwork, so often an adult leader acts as an observer of the activities of the Scouts.

Activity

Scouting involves a combination of indoor and outdoor activities. Activities are large-scale and long-lasting, such as camps, hikes, etc.; as well as short and comprehensive: for example, classes on knots, providing first aid, and others. Scouts work on community service projects that help them understand the importance of giving back and making changes for the better in their communities.

Distinction and awards

By learning different skills and gaining different experiences through participation in activities and projects, Scouts can earn badges and awards that symbolise their achievements. This system encourages personal growth and motivates Scouts to challenge themselves and try new things.

Values and Method

Scouting is built around a set of core values that are underpinned by the Scout Promise and Law. More about them you can read in the Scout Method section

Support and safety

Scout organizations worldwide prioritize the safety and well-being of their members, and NOSU is no exception. Our Scout Leaders undergo special "Safe from Harm" training, developed and patented by the WOSM to guarantee a safe and supportive environment for all members of the Scout Movement in any activity. In Scouting, every member of the Organization gets the opportunity to gain valuable life skills, make lifelong friends, become a driver of change at local and global levels, create unforgettable memories, and much more. Scouting helps everyone become a more confident, responsible, and comprehensively developed person.
